Fax (Facsimile) machines are a source of sending copies to the distant locations over the telephone line, which are nowadays sent through servers. The great advantage of Fax that makes it stand-alone is its instant transfer of data. The Fax machine consists of a scanner and a modem. Some Fax machines are also equipped with printer and photocopier. The image scanner scans the image and the modem translates the data to encoded message and sends it over the line, which is then reproduced at the receiving terminal.

The Fax machines are basically of two types, the analog Fax machine and the Digital Fax machine. When this technology devise was invented century before, the analog Fax machines were used. Although the machine was invented long ago but it has gained popularity in recent years with more advancement in its technology and decrease in its cost. Today Digital Fax machines have almost replaced Analog Fax machines.

The Digital Faxing initially started in Japan, and now it has spread to the whole world. And from the time Internet has entered in this field this machine has come in vogue. The Fax servers are established over which the data is sent in digital form, through local loops and digital subscriber lines. As the data is sent in digital form, so it can now be easily modified for reducing the time it takes to send a page.

The original data is compressed and encoded in a new form of data, which is then divided into small packets of information and sent over the Internet server to the other machine. The other machine decodes and decompresses this data and prints the original document as it is. That is why the Digital Fax machine when considering the speed of delivery enjoys an edge. And so machines are often classified on the basis of time they take to send data.

Generally two methods of data compression are used; they are Hoffman’s coding and Differential Manchester Coding. In Hoffman’s coding each word is compressed with some algorithm and the blank spaces are excluded and then the message is further encoded and sent. While in Differential Manchester Coding a single line is scanned and encoded at a time, which is then compared with the succeeding encoded scanned line, and that difference is sent over the server.

At the receiver terminal the demodulator and the decoder are tuned to work over these encoded documents; the receiver Fax machine produces the same document, in lesser time and incurring lesser cost. These devises are greatly helpful especially for sending international documents otherwise it may take very long to send the data if previous analog technology were used.

Thus the present needs of the companies demand an advanced technology devise that can reduce the running cost of operation. This is achievable if the devise integrates the entire technological features in a single unit. So the better idea is to buy a Fax machine, which is equipped with high quality printer that features a scanner and a copier
