The Bare Facts on Naked DSL and VoIP

Before Naked DSL, those looking for an Internet connection without the added cost of telephone line rental were restricted to either cable or wireless connections. The main drawbacks for wireless are that the speeds are generally nowhere near as fast as Naked DSL, wireless connections are not as stable (they drop out) and extra services like VoIP often struggle on a wireless internet connection.

What Is Naked DSL?

The term Naked DSL has been getting a lot of media attention lately, mostly because of the catchy name. The term "naked" refers to the fact that you get a telephone line that you do not have to pay line rental for. The "DSL" stands for Digital Subscriber Line and represents the broadband connection that runs over your "naked" telephone line. Basically the service is a broadband Internet dedicated phone line that does not include a traditional telephone service and hence no line rental. Put another way, an ISP that provides Naked DSL is using a telephone line that is not connected to the Telstra telephone network.

Benefits of Going Naked

The main significance of having a Naked DSL service is the cost saving on line rental, which is generally around $29.95.

Without having line rental and those high call rates to pay, a VoIP service can be used to further save money on your phone calls. In this case, the voice calls are routed over the Internet instead of the old copper PSTN network controlled by Telstra.

A VoIP service gives you a virtual phone number that can be called from normal telephone services.

Disadvantages of Going Naked

Because you are using the Internet to carry your phone calls, you will be susceptible to Internet drop-outs. Although this is becoming rarer, drop-outs do still happen.
If you run a business and can't afford this to happen, it is recommended to have a secondary fall-back Internet connection. You can still utilise the secondary Internet connection with a "load balancing server" that let's an office use both connections at the same time.

Telstra Offering Naked DSL?

Look out, Telstra is offering Naked DSL? This sounds like a contradiction in terms, since Naked DSL by its definition is a means to avoid Telstra line rental. An interesting recent development in the Naked DSL and VoIP market, Telstra has begun a Naked DSL "trial", offering it to customers on a 24 month contract, which defeats the definition of a trial, really.
The Telstra offering is sketchy, with no pricing published and no details as to how their version of Naked DSL is being delivered.

Telstra has also been finding ways to prevent customers moving to Naked DSL. For example, most Internet providers require that an active telephone line is required before installing Naked DSL. This means that you need to have a pre-existing fixed line with Telstra. Telstra has deemed any new landline connection (under 3 months old) to be a "temporary connection". Anyone attempting to cancel/move the connection to a Naked DSL service is charge a $100 cancellation fee if the telephone connection is under 3 months old. This guarantees that Telstra collects either 3 months of line rental or the "temporary connection" cancellation fee on top of the initial connection fee.

Optus Embraces Naked DSL But Not VoIP

While there is a lot of hearsay on the terms of conditions of the Telstra Naked DSL, Optus is now offering Naked DSL, but with a lot of strings attached. Rather than cannibalise its fixed line telephone business, Optus is not offering a VoIP service with Naked DSL, but is instead promoting a capped mobile bundle. The top plan data limit is just 30Gig, not comparing very well with a lot of the competition in the market. Uploads as well as downloads are counted towards your data limit.

Also, since 2008, Optus has been combating the use of VoIP and calling-card services over its fixed line plans by asserting that it has the right to levy international call rates on calls that use VoIP and calling card services that use a mobile or PSTN number as a dial-in point before connecting the call to an overseas number.

Where Is Naked DSL Available?

Naked DSL is already rolled out in a lot of suburbs and regional centres across Victoria and other states in Australia. The gaps are slowly being filled where it is not already available although this is usually pushed forward by expression of interest and statistical demand.
